I threw on Horsefight’s EP “Volunteer” while doing the painstakingly boring chore of folding the laundry that I left in the dryer overnight to appropriately wrinkle, rendering half of its contents nearly unwearable in public spaces, and I realized I haven’t told you guys about them, so here we are.
Horsefight is a collaborative effort between newlyweds Greg Wood and Sabine Bischofberger (congrats!) and Fred Ness. Based out of Seattle, Washington, they’ll tell ya they’re sort of a mashup between The Pixies and The Rolling Stones. I don’t listen to the Pixes often, so you can be the judge there, but I can attest to that straight-forward rock’n’roll that’s got that thin later of dirt and dust hanging off it’s amplifiers is ever present in the chunky chords and groovy riffs that accompany.
The 6-track EP was released on February 21st 2025 and lyrically I found it super easy to relate to. Tracks like Free Time (CF’s personal favourite) manage to capture that goofy carefree and mildly anxious feeling you get when you’re having too much fun doing sort of nothing of any perceivable societal value, like making rad rock records in your room when your pals are out slugging their 9-5’s knowing that while you’re personally unbothered by the way you’re piddling around your own life, you might also be falling behind a little bit (Is home ownership even remotely attainable anymore? Does it matter?) and one day you might look back and think, “hey, I could have done more, but you know what, I didn’t. and I guess that’s fine, too.”
The track that follows, “Burden” hits that angsty-introvert sweet spot, repeating “waiting for the next bad thing to happen,” as though, to protect our sanity, it’s best to absolve ourselves of any real responsibility for how our personal choices impact the greater reach and influence of the outsider sources that pigeon-hole us in our respective communities.
