Canadian musician Alanna Matty knocks another one out of the park with her latest release Serotonin. The Halifax-based songwriter has a particular ear for matching the tone of her productions with the feelings evoked by the stories described in her lyricism and Serotonin is a perfect example of that.
It’s a slow burning ballad that leans heavily on delicate piano but the real treat comes from her beautiful use of vocal harmony. The track is airy and breathy, mimicking the contemplative and reflective nature of the song which yearns for a return to a feeling of contentment. Inspired by Matty’s own lack of serotonin after struggling with her mental health, the song perfectly encapsulates both the sorrow that leads to a diminished state of mind and the hopeful relief from its harmful clutches.
