With an almost animalistic nature, a lush wave of soulful blues guitars rushes out.
Perhaps unsurprising given its namesake, the alluring tone is joined by jazz-inspired rhythms, soulful bass bopping along to the intentional shuffling of the drums and breezy staccato guitars carrying the beat steadily onto our auditory canal.
While we got a small taste of the vocal stylings of Alien Feli at the outset of the track, as he takes center stage he all but overtakes it, sitting comfortably within the bluesy venue that lured us to him, he’s got a distinct character that seems at home with alternative rock icon Chris Cornell, but with the tender timbre of Lousiana jazz vocalists like Harry Connick Jr. The combination makes for a seductive allure that leaves you waiting for its return as it melts away into an equally delectable and moving guitar solo that would have John Mayer turning his head. It’s provocative, satiating and tonally interesting without taking too much attention away from the pulsing foundation it swims over top of.
Despite the title and the clear influence of jazz and soul music present throughout, before long Alien Feli’s Jazzmine enters into more of a classic-rock space, feeling better suited for arena-rock stadiums than intimate lounges. While any one style is difficult to pinpoint as the conscious arrangements of lucid musical styles are so well-woven, the atmosphere they cultivate is one of tranquility, far more like the comforts of home rather than anything abstract or dare we say, alien.
The track culminates with a driven drum solo and energetic guitar riffs that carry the same feverish passion as the vocals that have long since faded away after a sustained repeating of “can’t imagine life without you,” a sentiment we’ll hold with us as we await Alien Feli’s follow up to Jazzmine.
