The Clearing Track By Track: If Not Now

Continuing on our blog breakdown of The Clearing, today we’ve got track 9: If Not Now

Listen on YouTube below.

But don’t forget the album is available basically everywhere except for Spotify and Amazon Music!

30:10 mark or so.

About the Track

So, I’ve actually already spoken about If Not Now a few times, most recently on February 14th when I released a special acoustic alternate of the track with an extended bridge. So for the sake of everyone’s sanity, to learn about what this track is all about, head on over to this blog I’m linking to right here to read about it and listen to the other version!

Production wise, this is largely all the same original parts I put together for the first demo cut of this song, but I re-tracked the vocals and scaled by the vocal processing to give it a more natural feel.

There’s actually a lot of things I likely would’ve done a little differently for this one if I had more tools at my disposal. For one, I’d love to have added some strings to build up the choruses, and make the overall track more acoustic guitar/piano based rather than the guitars I used instead.

That said I still really like how this one turned out, it’s just that when I first wrote it I heard something a little differently in my head, so hopefully one day I can get around to trying some other arrangements with it.

Official Lyrics

Pulling the fabric at the seams
Something about this feels so real to me
I want to show you where I’ve been
I want to tell you my best stories
And the ones I try so hard to forget

It sounds crazy, believe me
Like I was always supposed to know you somehow
Not just in passing but how it all went down

Can you show me
You’ve got my full attention
Backstage in the dressing room of my favourite venue
The lights are off and there’s no one around
Tell me when if not now

It’s when your eyes meet mine
Something about this feels too real this time
I want to know if you remember
The first time that I met you
I was nervous, and so embarrassed
But you pretended not to notice
I swore you knew

Tell me about your years of rebellion
Tell me when you thought you lost it all
How did you pick yourself back up and
How far did you have to crawl

A Little More

Since I don’t exactly have someone to tell all the stories I try to forget or the ones that keep me up at night, either in wonder, disbelief, confusion, amazement or a combination of all of the above, this record and all the ones to follow are my way of doing just that, so thanks for listening & reading these blogs.

Come back tomorrow for the blog breakdown of the final track on the album, Tradition!
